This research analyses the development of antibacterial and antioxidant films utilising bacterial cellulose, alginate, and Vitex negundo plant extract, aiming to tackle environmental and functional issues in food preservation and biomedical applications. The films were produced through incorporating V. negundo extract, obtained from Soxhlet extraction, into an alginate-bacterial cellulose matrix at concentrations of 0.25% and 0.5%. The results indicated that increasing the extract concentration improved the bioactive characteristics of the films. The 0.5% film demonstrated enhanced antibacterial efficacy, with inhibition zone widths rising by 23.33% for Bacillus subtilis and 12% for Escherichia coli. In addition, antioxidant activity markedly boosted, proven by an increased DPPH scavenging rate of 72.92% in contrast to 54.94% for the 0.25% film. FTIR measurement validated the successful incorporation of the plant extract, evidenced by more prominent functional group peaks in the 0.5% film, signifying an elevated concentration of bioactive compounds. The resultsindicate that V. negundo-derived films had the potential to offer long-lasting and effective antibacterial and antioxidant treatments, underscoring the necessity of optimising extract concentration for improved efficacy.
