This study explores the potential of Pickering emulsions as a sustainable strategy for stabilizing oil-water systems using solid particles instead of traditional surfactants, offering advantages such as enhanced stability and reduced environmental impact. Hydrophobic cellulose nanocrystalline (H-CNC), synthesized via alkylsilylation with cholorotrimethylsilane (CTMS), was used as the stabilizer, with different CTMS loadings tested to identify the optimal conditions for Pickering emulsion formation. The H-CNC samples were characterized using various techniques to analyze their properties: Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the successful chemical modifications and incorporation of hydrophobic functional groups; field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) revealed a uniform rod-like morphology and rough surface texture; thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated enhanced thermal stability with higher CTMS loading, indicating effective functionalization; and hydrophobicity testing showed a significant increase in water contact angle, confirming improved surface hydrophobicity. Palm oil-based Pickering emulsions stabilized with H-CNC-400 exhibited remarkable stability, with minimal phase separation observed over 14 days, particularly at optimal CTMS loading. These findings highlight the efficiency of H-CNC400 as a stabilizer and the potential of Pickering emulsions as a sustainable alternative for stabilizing oil-water systems.
