In this research, there are three objectives needed to be achieved which are investigation of percentage yield of divanillin and chemical structure of vanillin and divanillin, the synthesis process of vanillin-based epoxies by differentiate their curing time, and the study the chemical structure and solvent resistance of vanillin-based epoxies which cured for different duration. In the synthesis process, heating process, and gravity filtration is the major method to get the synthesized products which are divanillin and epoxidized divanillin. The percentage yield of divanillin is calculated by using theoretical and actual yield. Comparison between vanillin and divanillin are studied through carbon-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectra. The curing time of the vanillin-based epoxy resins are categorized into 1 hour and 2 hours to find out its solvent resistance to four distinct solvents. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy in Attenuated total reflectance (ATR-FTIR) is used to investigate the possible functional groups in the EDV/IPDA epoxy. In conclusion, there are similarity and difference between vanillin and divanillin due to divanillin is the synthesized product of vanillin. ATR-FTIR method in the wavenumber range of 400-4000 cm-1 can recognize the key functional groups of the epoxidized divanillin (EDV) such as epoxy groups which indicated the successfully cured process in of the EDV/IPDA epoxy. Solvent resistance of the EDV/IPDA with longer curing time is more excellent due to the crosslinking network structure is more rigid and tight than the crosslinking network structure of EDV/IPDA with 1 hour curing time. These results in these experiments provide valuable insights into the synthesis process, chemical structure, solvent resistance, and percentage yield of synthesized products.
