The development of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has attracted significant attention in wastewater treatment due to its potential for efficient nutrient removal and compact biomass retention. This study aimed to investigate the influence of feast and famine phase duration on AGS formation in a continuous airlift reactor. Specifically, the research was conducted using Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) as the substrate. The reactor was operated with varying feast and famine phase durations, namely feast and famine ratios of 1:3,6 hours of feeding and 18 hours of starvation. POME, obtained from the Lepar Palm Oil Mill, was utilized as the feedstock substitute. Throughout the study, the hydraulic retention time and organic loading rate was maintained at constant. Regular sampling of the outlet POME was conducted to evaluate the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD). These parameters serve as indicators of AGS formation efficiency and the reactor's treatment performance. By monitoring COD removal under different feast and famine phase durations, the optimal conditions for AGS formation in the continuous airlift reactor can be determined. The study's focus on COD removal addresses the crucial challenge of organic pollutant removal, specifically in the context of palm oil mill effluent. The findings provided insights into optimizing AGS formation for improved wastewater treatment efficiency, contributing to sustainable environmental practices. In summary, this study investigated the impact of feast and famine phase duration on AGS formation in a continuous airlift reactor using POME as the substrate.
