The research focuses on the use of Attached Growth Microbial Fuel Cell (AG-MFC) for palm oil wastewater (POME) treatment, aiming to improve pollutant removal efficiency while generating electricity. AG-MFC convert organic matter into electricity, while Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) enhances pollutant removal by supporting microbial attachment and adsorption. The research aims to study the optimum GAC dosage for removing COD, BOD, O&G, and turbidity from POME, as well as identifying the bacteria morphology attached to GAC in AG-MFC. The study scope encompasses sample collection, acclimatization, shaker tests, AG-MFC setup, a 30-day treatment phase, FESEM and EDX analyses. Performance evaluation across various Organic Loading Rates (OLR) considers COD, BOD, Colour, O&G, and turbidity removal efficiency, along with energy recovery efficiency. A GAC dosage of 20 g/L, chosen through shaker tests, is implemented in a 30-day treatment cycle. The study on 30-day treatment with three different COD influent concentrations, 1500 mg/L, 2000 mg/L, and 3000 mg/L, showed that an increase in COD influent could increase removal efficiency for COD, BOD, O&G, and turbidity, except for colour. An elevated COD influent concentration could enhance electricity generation. The influent with a 3000 mg/L COD concentration consistently demonstrated superior performance, achieving removal efficiencies of 96.49%, 98.41%, 19.39%, 92.84%, and 98.53% for COD, BOD, Colour, O&G, and turbidity, and an average electricity generation of 250.66 mV. The 3000 mg/L COD influent remains a feasible choice, provided that supplementary colour removal methods are integrated into the system. The FESEM analysis revealed the potential presence of thermophilic bacteria including Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus smithii, and Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum in AG-MFC. The EDX analysis on GAC demonstrated significant capabilities in adsorbing organic matter and metal contaminants in POME. AG-MFC provides efficient POME treatment, but careful consideration is needed for efficient parameter removal, particularly colour, to comply with standard discharge limits.
