Chlorinated compounds are serious environmental contaminants due to their high toxicity, which is harmful to human health and the environment when present in groundwater and soil. 1,2- dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) was an example of a chlorinated compound that was usually used in industry. Anaerobic biodegradation is a cost-effective and efficient method for remediating chlorinated sediments because it converts toxic compounds into non-toxic byproducts via organohalide respiring bacteria (OHRB). On the other hand, redox conditions such as iron and nitrate reduction will increase the metabolic activity and growth of OHRB, resulting in faster biodegradation of 1,2-DCA while sulphate reducing bacteria may be unfavorable to OHRB bacteria because they compete for hydrogen. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different redox conditions on 1,2-DCA degradation by OHRB in Sungai Ular sediment. The degradation of 1,2-DCA were tested under different redox conditions such as nitrate reducing, iron reducing and sulfate reducing with three different concentrations of the respective compounds. The 1,2-DCA was added to a nominal concentration of 100 μM. The concentration of redox condition was varied to observe the biodegradation rate of 1,2-DCA. The results showed that the highest biodegradation rates for nitrate, sulphate, and iron reducing conditions were achieved at 2 mM (82.78%), 1 mM (81.52%), and 10 mM (91.65%), respectively. The results of this study demonstrate that OHRB in the Sungai Ular sediment can degrade 1,2-DCA under any redox condition but prefers a certain concentration. Keywords: Chlorinated compounds; Biodegradation; Organohalide Respiring Bacteria; Redox; 1,2-Dichloroethane
