This study presents a simulation study of the wastewater treatment process in poultry slaughterhouses using GPS-X simulation software to evaluate the performance of existing Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater Treatment Plant (PSWTP) from Integrated Poultry Industries Sdn Bhd (IPI) and optimize the process to minimize environmental impacts as well as comply the environmental regulation stipulated in Industrial Effluent Regulation (IER) 2009. The simulation model incorporates the physical and chemical processes involved in the treatment of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater, including Equation Tank (EQ), chemical treatment, Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF), Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR), and sludge dewatering system. Then, the calibration and validation of simulation model was carried out by adjusting the model parameters to match the observed performance of the actual treatment system under specific operating conditions to ensure its accuracy and reliability in predicting the behavior of the poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treatment process. Lastly, the optimization of IPI PWS treatment process was conducted with the calibrated simulation model to determine the optimum control condition for the environmental regulation compliance, where the result shown that the existing IPI PSWTP able to treat the poultry wastewater with the influent’s COD concentration of 1,500 mg/L and comply with the DOE discharge standard B consistently for parameters of COD and TSS but the parameter of AN found exceed the DOE discharge standard of 20 mg/L at Day-3, which is not represent the actual measured data due to lacking information of nitrogen compound from the IPI PSWTP for simulation process. Overall, this simulation study provides valuable insights into the design and optimization of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treatment systems, which can contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly poultry industry.
