Bacterial cellulose (BC) has emerged as a highly effective material for wound dressings due to its unique structure and properties. However, BC lacks inherent antimicrobial properties, limiting its effectiveness in preventing infections This study aims to enhance the antimicrobial properties of BC by incorporating chitosan (Ch), a biodegradable polymer with inherent antimicrobial characteristics, to develop a composite optimized for wound healing applications. The BC used in this research was extracted from nata de coco, an affordable and environmentally friendly source, recognized for its exceptional purity and compatibility with biological system. The composite was produced using Ch solutions of varying concentrations (1%, 1.5%, and 2%). Analyses using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) confirmed the successful incorporation of Ch, which enhanced the composite's structural and chemical properties. The antimicrobial activity of the composites was evaluated using the agar diffusion method against Escherichia coli. Results showed a dose-dependent improvement in antimicrobial performance, with the BC- Ch composite at 2% Ch concentration exhibiting the largest inhibition zone of 15 mm, compared to 6 mm for pure BC. This indicates a significant enhancement in antimicrobial efficacy. In conclusion, the BC- Ch composite demonstrates strong potential as an effective and sustainable alternative to conventional wound dressings. By combining the structural benefits of BC with the antimicrobial properties of Ch, the composite addresses key challenges in wound care, offering improved infection control and wound healing capabilities. This study provides a foundation for further development of advanced, eco-friendly wound dressing materials.
