China was the first country in the world to discover, cultivate, process and use tea. For thousands of years, tea, with its vast varieties and styles, health benefits and deep cultural context, is deeply entwined in the lives and emotions of the Chinese people. From state celebrations to folk customs, tea sends forth its fresh aroma. Tea is also a strong link between China and the rest of the world. It was carried to other places around the world over 2000 years ago. British historian Dr. Joseph Needam wrote in his famous Science and Civilization in China that tea was China’s fifth contribution to the world after its four great inventions of gunpowder, paper making, printing and the compass.
