Performance of concrete structure due to lateral load with different concrete grade / Asilah Che Daud - Kuantan, Pahang : UMP, 2007 - xiv, 77 p. : ill. ; 30 cm.
Project paper (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2007
Since the past 150 years, a survey of engineering literature reveals many references to structural failures caused by wind. However, conventional structure designs in Malaysia usually neglected wind loading because of the fact that wind load in Malaysia are relatively small compared to countries such as Japan, the United States of America and etcetera. On the other hand, the type of structures commonly constructed nowadays is mid-rise structures or high-rise structures because of the land unavailability particularly in developing town or congested cities such as Kuantan or Kuala Lumpur. In reinforced concrete structure's construction, the grade 25 is the lowest grade that may be used as reinforced concrete. Normally in reinforced concrete design, the grade ranges between grade 25 to grade 50. In this study, a ten stories structure were designed using three different concrete grades that is grade 25, grade 30 and grade 35. The structure design was in accordance with British Standard 8110: 1997 and using EsteemPlus software. The structures were subjected to wind loading analysed based on Malaysian Standard 1553: 2002. The joints displacement for each structure was determined and analysed using SAP2000 software. The performance and the effectiveness of the reinforced concrete structure with different concrete grades were evaluated from the view of the joint displacement measurement and comparison. From the results obtained, the most effective concrete grade in resisting lateral wind load is Grade 35 where the joint displacement is lesser than the limit displacement established. -Author
