Project paper (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2007
Empty fruit bunch (EFB) is one of the waste biomass when producing crude palm oil (CPO). EFB are mainly incinerated to produce bunch ash to be distributed back to the field as fertilizer. The conventional method of burning these residues often creates environmental problems in that generates severe air pollution and is prohibited by the Environment Protection Act. In abiding by the regulation, these residues are becoming expensive to dispose. The objectives of this study is to determine the effects of moisture content in EFB to attract termites attack and also to determine the performance of EFB as artificial bait in termites attack. For this study, the sample of EFB is taken from Lepar Hilir Palm Oil Factory, Felda Palm Industries Sdn. Bhd, Gambang, Kuantan. For the first stage experiment, 5 samples of EFB with natural moisture content placed in study field in Kg. Seri Damai Tengah, Lorong Masjid, laya Gading, Kuantan. Observations are made for every 3 days for two times. For the second stage, sample preparation of 5 samples with different moisture content is made in the laboratory. Then the samples will be left out in study site for 7 days and repeat for five times. From the result 0 % of moisture content cannot attract termites attack but when moisture content increasing, numbers of termites also increasing. The results show that an optimum moisture content of the samples which is around 98 % can attract 200 until 600 termites. This study have achieve their objective and have been prove that the increasing of moisture content can also increasing the numbers of termites that attack the samples. The relationship of moisture content with termites is an important issue because one of the reasons that termites attack EFB is due to the moisture content. In conclusion EFB compound or compost can attract termites attack. -Author
