Project paper (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2007
The used of stabilized soil using cement and lime has been vastly discovered in the low cost construction such as housing, sub-urban road, building blocks and slope stabilization. It appears as an alternative to an easily obtained material, economic and can uphold compressive stresses. Due to its ability to support the compressive stress, the use of reinforced bars and aggregates are negligible. Generally, the addition of stabilizing agents will upgrade the strength of soil, not just any soils but depending on the types of soils and the stabilizer used. The objective of this project is to study the applicability and effectiveness of cement and lime in order to stabilize soil that is obtained from two different areas. One sample was taken in Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and the other sample was taken in Bukit Rangin residential area The past experiments had undergone various stage of mixtures and percentages of stabilizing agents such as 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% at most and so on according to which produces the most economic solution, yet the strongest. In this report, cement and lime will be used at 20% of the soils mass, in the preparation of the samples, in which to obtain the strength of soil when applied to the construction. Standard Proctor Test was conducted to obtain shear strength of the stabilized soil. The study shows the strength of stabilized soil increases with the mixture with cement and lime. From the testing, the result shows that for sample taken in UMP for sample added with 5% water content soil sample mixed with cement give the highest dry unit weight value, 15.27 kN/ m3, for 10% sample mixed with lime, 15.77 kN/ m3, for 20% sample mixed with lime, 16.52 kN/ m3, and for 30% sample mixed with cement, 15.09 kN/ m3. And for soil sample taken in Bukit Rangin for sample added with 5% soil sample mixed with lime, 15.94 kN/ m3, for 10%, sample mixed with lime, 16.19 kN/ m3, for 20% sample mixed with lime, 16.05 kN/ m3, and for 30% the control sample, 14.37 kN/ m3. In term of cost, stabilization with cement in more cost effective compares using lime. -Author
