Titanium and its alloy are widely used in various industries owing to its low mass, high strength and excellent toughness. In machining operation, roughness of a titanium surface influences a wide variety of its physical properties. Therefore, it is necessary to produce surfaces with roughness that fall within specified limits and which are of a certain type. In the present work, surface finish of titanium in turning with titanium aluminium nitride (TiAlN) coated insert has been investigated using three different parameters, namely cutting length, cutting speed and feed rate. Machining of titanium was carried out on a Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) turning center. The experiments were designed in STATISTICA software in order to minimize experimental errors. 33 full factorial design was chosen for experimental design. Experimental outcomes were analyzed in STATISTICA. The surface roughness and tool sharpness were measured using perthometer. The statistical analysis revealed that feed rate and cutting length are two significant parameters that affect the surface roughness of titanium during turning. Overall, it was found that using a low feed rate and short cutting length always provides good surface roughness. The trends of surface roughness became inconsistent with increasing feed rate and cutting length. It is also important to note as a secondary factor cutting speed at higher value usually led to poor surface quality. Lastly, a higher rating index of tool sharpness also causes a deterioration of the surface quality of titanium.
