It has been shown that the performance of a CNG fuelled spark ignition engine can be enhanced considerably when relatively small amounts of hydrogen are present with methane. This improvement in performance which is especially pronounced at operational equivalence ratios that are much leaner than the stoichiometric value, can be attributed largely to the faster and cleaner burning characteristics of hydrogen in comparison to methane. This project is aimed to design a mixer that would enable hydrogen and CNG to be mixed before they enter the intake manifold of the engine. The principle is similar to the ones used in CNG powered vehicles to mix CNG with air. By utilising the venturi concept, suction is induced in the mixer by pressure difference at the throat of the mixer. This pressure difference is due to air being accelerated at the throat of the mixer due to the smaller area of the throat. However the velocity of air being accelerated must be regulated so that it would not achieve speeds which are near the compressible limit of air. Failure to do so could cause the engine to be chocked. The mixing of hydrogen and CNG in the mixer must be able to achieve an air/fuel ratio that is suitable for the operation of the engine. An air/fuel ratio that is too rich or too lean could affect the performance of the engine as well as causing damage to the engine. Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, the mixing of hydrogen and CNG will be analysed whether or not it achieves the desired air/fuel ratio while Computer Aided Design (CAD) software will be used in making design improvements to the mixer. The final design of the mixer will be validated by using CFD.
