This study mainly focuses on generation of gas under the presence of aluminium phosphate, AlPO4 catalyst through hydrocarbon cracking method on waste cooking oil. This research is aimed to characterize catalyst’s properties, determine performance of catalyst in production of gas CH4 and investigate usage of different sizes of catalysts in production of gas. There will be three parts in this research; Part A focused on the analysis of rare earth elements in rock samples and Part B is prepared the raw material as the catalyst whereas Part C comprised of the experimental procedures. In part A, crushed rock samples were analyzed by using several techniques. The analysis has found that in a rock samples containing rare earths elements especially lanthanum and cerium, have high thermal stability, functional groups such as O-P and also identified components of aluminium phosphate, AlPO4 catalyst which is berlinite. In part B, the catalyst was prepared from rock samples and the prepared catalyst was activated as a basic by using ammonium hydroxide solution. Then, non-regenerative catalysts were tested and characterized for their surface area, porosity, functional group component and analyzed crystal structure. From the analysis, the catalyst that has been identified is aluminium phosphate, AlPO4 catalyst. In part C, the efficiency and selectivity of the catalyst was determined through hydrocracking process of waste cooking oil. The small size of catalyst takes faster to react to produced methane gas, compared with the large size of the catalyst. For the particle size 160μm has produced 5.14% methane gas and the largest size of 250μm catalyst produced 5.12% of gas methane. Moreover, the time for reaction and conversion rates by using the aluminium phosphate, AlPO4 catalyst was higher than condition without the use of a catalyst. Henceforth, the aluminium phosphate, AlPO4 accelerated the reaction and increased the activities of the catalyst to produce methane gas from waste cooking oil.
