Polishing is finishing process for smoothing a work piece’s surface using an abrasive and a work wheel. The thesis deals with the utilization of CNC to polish the mould. The objectives of this thesis is to polish the mould using robotic system based on traditional manual polishing and also to analyze the surface roughness and time using different parameters which are spindle speed, tool path, and feed rate. In this thesis, experimental methods started with generate G-code using Mastercam. The material used in this experiment is P20 steel with dimension of 85 mm lengths, 85 mm width and 20 mm thickness. The abrasive tool known as mounted point attached to the CNC milling machine. Analyzing the surface roughness is done by Perthometer S2. Using Taguchi method as design of experiment (DOE), other significant effects such as the interaction among polishing parameters are also investigated. The study used Taguchi method to solve the stated problem with minimum number of trials as compared with a full factorial design. An orthogonal array, the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) are employed to investigate the optimum combination. With orthogonal array L , nine trial experiments are done. As a result, the CNC can do polishing with robot system application based on conventional polishing. The optimum combination in surface roughness is A3b3c2 for surface roughness characteristic. Optimum combination of parameter for time characteristic is A1b1c3 . The mostnsignificant parameter for surface roughness characteristic is spindle speed while the most significant parameter for time characteristic is tool path. As recommendation, improvement needs for the shape of the mould to make it close with what mould look like.
