Carburizing is the process of adding carbon to the surface of the material. This thesis is entitled about the study effect of carbonization on erosion corrosion. The goal of this thesis was to contribute to a better understanding of the effect on carbonization on erosion corrosion in aqueous slurry. The objectives of this study are to analysis the corrosion rate of carburizing material and study the effect of erosion corrosion on the outer surface of the material. Carburizing process which is case hardening has been performed with heated the material to 850 oC for 8 hours. The electrochemical study was conducted by using a potentiostat equipment. The solution for electrochemical study is 3.5 % of sodium chloride (NaCl) with 10wt % sand from the total volume solution. The hardness of material can be obtained by Vickers hardness test. Specimen with carburizing is more harder with a hardness value of 325.5 Hv compared to the specimen without carburizing with a hardness value of 208.13 Hv. The result reveals that the corrosion rate for carburizing specimen in the range of 0.45 mm/yr to 0.46 mm/yr while for the specimen without carburizing the corrosion rate in the range of 1.3 mm/yr to 1.6 mm/yr. Material with corrosion rate less are considered relative corrosion resistance. Pitting corrosion occurs at the outer surface of material without carburizing after the electrochemical test because of removal of corrosion products by ion exchange. Carburizing process can minimize the effect of material on erosion corrosion with with increase corrosion resistance and also increase hardness of material.
