Rapid growth of development in Gebeng industrial area with multifarious industries and mining activities has overstressed the river system surrounding the area. Industrial activities based on petrochemical and bauxite mining have been identified as the contributor to chemicals and heavy metals pollution in water bodies based on the effluents discharged. Heavy metals accumulated in sediment for a long period of time and pose toxic to aquatic ecosystem. Water contamination with organic and inorganic compounds such as metals and pesticides has motivated people to develop methods of purification and extraction such as adsorption of pollutant by using activated carbon. The aim of this study was to analyse the ability of activated carbon from banana peel in treating polluted wastewater collected from Gebeng industrial area. Physical and chemical parameters of water were analysed to determine the initial pollution level to be compared with the level of pollution after treatment was carried out for 4 weeks. The parameters analysed were pH, turbidity, total suspended solid (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), oil and grease (O&G), ammonia content, and selected heavy metals which are zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu). 10L of wastewater samples were treated with 30g of activated carbon from banana peels in 3 different sizes which were powdered, 600𝜇m, and 1.18mm. After 4 weeks, the pollution level of each parameter was reduced to a very small concentration below the allowable standard value. O&G, ammoniacal nitrogen, zinc and copper were completely removed from wastewater sample. This proved that activated carbon from banana peels has the ability to treat polluted wastewater by absorption of pollutants in wastewater. It was also clearly shown that powdered sized activated carbon was more effective in absorbing pollutant in wastewater compared to granular activated carbon (600𝜇m, and 1.18mm) since it has large surface-to-volume ratio with a small diffusion distance than granular activated carbon. In conclusion, results from the study shows that waste banana peels can be converted into high capacity adsorbent and can be used for the remediation of polluted industrial wastewater.
