This study was conducted to determine the removal efficiency of nutrient content (nitrate, NO3¯-N and phosphorus, PO43-) and ability of algae interception via different aquatic floating plants which are Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) and Pistia stratiotes (water lettuce) as a potential bioremediation strategy at Kotasas Lakeside. Several parameters were analyzed in this study in order to determine the potential of these plants, namely BOD5, COD, TSS, turbidity, nutrient content and heavy metals such as zinc and iron. The outcome of this study showed that water hyacinth has achieved the removal efficiency percentage of 87.7% for BOD5, 87.9% for COD, 97.2% for TSS, 87.2% for turbidity, 90.9% for NO3¯-N, 95.7% for PO43-, 95.7% for zinc and 90.8% for iron; whereas water lettuce has the removal efficiency of 55.1% for BOD5, 85.0% for COD, 75.0% for TSS, 78.0% for turbidity, 95.5% for NO3¯-N, 74.6% for PO43-, 83.0% for zinc and 79.8% for iron. However, water lettuce has shown its high accumulating capacity of 95.5% reduction in nitrate concentration, which was more effective than water lettuce in treating contaminated water body with high nitrate concentrations. This result was due to the attribution of larger total root surface area, high absorption capacity and photosynthesis rate of water lettuce. Statistical analysis were conducted on every parameters using one way ANOVA, and the results showed there were significance differences between the control sample and both aquatic plants (P<0.05). Therefore, this results point out that bioremediation technology was capable of reducing nutrient and heavy metal contents in contaminated eutrophic lake, and water hyacinth has a higher overall removal efficiency percentage compared to water lettuce.
