Lightweight concrete (LWC) is preferred over conventional construction solutions attributed to its advantageous characteristics. Use of oil palm shell (OPS) as the lightweight aggregate is known as a viable method in fabricating lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC). However, the low mechanical property is the major drawback for LWAC confining its structural applications. The inclusion of bamboo fibre is one of the effective and economical methods for strengthening the LWAC. In this research, the effects of bamboo fibre on the workability, density, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength of OPS lightweight concrete were studied. Different volume fractions of bamboo fibre were added in the concrete which were 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%. The results showed that an increase in fibre by volume decreased the slump value and density of OPS concrete. The 28-day compressive strength decreased with the incorporation of bamboo fibre and was found to be in the range of 28.6-41.7 MPa. In contrast, by increasing bamboo fibre up to 1.0%, the splitting tensile strength and flexural strength were increased by 11.7% and 30.8%, respectively. The ratio percentages of splitting tensile strength to compressive strength of bamboo fibre reinforced OPS concretes reported were in the range of 9.3-11.1% which were comparable with normal weight concrete (NWC). The flexural strength to compressive strength ratios reported were also higher than the conventional LWAC.
