Summary, etc. The photochemical transformation of organic pollutants over artificial light emitters is a convenient alternative, offering greater freedom of control over solar sources. Recently, a novel approach aimed to elevate the irradiation profile within traditional photocatalytic reactors by incorporating an LED-based light emitter powered through inductive power transfer (IPT) has been proposed. Previous photocatalytic reactor coil designs overlooked magnetic field uniformity, leading to blackouts when the light emitter traversed regions with weakened fields. Additionally, the direct connection of conventional class-E amplifiers to reactive loads, like the triple Helmholtz coil pairs (3HCP) proposed here, posed safety risks due to potential overheating and electrocution hazards. Furthermore, current artificial lighting in conventional photocatalytic reactors is energetically inefficient, requiring high power and offering a poor irradiation profile, compounded by environmental toxicity from the use of mercury. In this study, a system consisting of multiple spherically shaped LED-based light emitters with a custom-designed ferrite core to improve coupling is proposed to irradiate the interior of a cylindrical slurry photocatalytic reactor over a loosely coupled wireless power transfer system. The 3HCP unit with an optimized coil diameter and spacing was proposed to provide uniform magnetic field coverage inside a cylindrical reactor. A hybrid numerical-analytical method was employed to gauge the field uniformity by calculating the induced voltage at selected locations inside the reactor and verified experimentally. The 3HCP coil system was driven by a power transmitting unit (PTU) based on a class-E inverter with a loadmatched output transformer for isolation and ease in upscaling and downscaling. The PTU was characterized by power transfer efficiency (PTE) and experimental verification. Each power receiving unit (PRU) consisted of a tuned LC tank with a white LED and a custom-built ferrite rod to achieve simultaneous improvement in coupling coefficient and coil quality factor, allowing maximum energy transfer. The PRU was characterized by power delivered to the load (PDL) efficiency and experimental verification. The proposed system requires less than 0.8 W to generate a uniform magnetic field inside a 10.6 L acrylic cylinder with an induced voltage of 13.9 ± 0.95 to 14.63 ± 4.84 Vrms along the central axis and near the coil edge, respectively. In this work, a PTE of 23.7 % was achieved for the proposed PTU with the coil diameter ratio of 0.03, which was significant when the degree of asymmetry was considered. A measured loss in PTE of ~ 2 % was observed when the frequency was purposely deviated by ± 10 kHz from the operating frequency of 185 kHz, suggesting that the proposed PTU could tolerate a shift in frequency when the load varied. A coupling coefficient of 0.024 was achieved along the central axis of the transmitter coil at a zero angular misalignment for a receiver coil quality factor of 74 measured at the switching frequency of 185 kHz. Overall, the proposed coupler achieves a good coupling coefficient of 0.013-0.034 with a PDL efficiency of 94.8 % for up to 65 light emitters. When normalized to coil geometry ratio, the achieved PTE is better than other loosely coupled systems. The LED intensity could be regulated from 80-380 W/m2, a useful feature in the situation where high intensity promotes the recombination of electrons and holes. The proposed system has the potential to address all the issues associated with the conventional reactor designed for the photocatalytic oxidation of petrochemical wastewater.
