The increasing amount of hospital waste, especially non-contaminated clinical waste (SW409), poses significant environmental and management challenges in the Malaysian healthcare industry. This research assesses the effects of awareness of consequences, ascription of responsibility, attitudes to recycle, subjective norms, government support, and top management involvement on recycling intentions. The design combined a quantitative survey of 181 hospital managers with qualitative interviews with six managers. Structural equation modelling using SmartPLS was conducted to test the hypothesis. Quantitative results reveal that attitude, personal norms, government support, and top management involvement positively affect recycling intentions, while subjective norms and perceived behavioral control do not show significant effects. Personal norms were found to mediate the relationship between awareness, responsibility, and attitude with recycling intentions. However, perceived behavioral control did not moderate the relationship between attitudes and subjective norms. The qualitative findings provide indepth insights into the reasons behind the supported and unsupported factors affecting managers' intentions to recycle hospital waste. Managers expressed that attitude toward recycling, government support, and top management involvement were crucial in shaping their recycling decisions, as they aligned with organizational goals and regulatory requirements. The study concludes that managers and organizational factors are important in shaping recycling intentions, emphasizing the need for stronger institutional support and leadership involvement. Recommendations include implementing targeted government policies, training programs for managers, and promoting an organizational culture prioritizing sustainable waste management. These insights provide actionable strategies to increase recycling efforts in healthcare, contributing to environmental sustainability and better waste management practices. |
