In Malaysia, internet usage has expanded tremendously with the proliferation of internet-enabled devices. According to the Internet Users Survey (IUS) conducted by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in 2023, the average daily internet usage among young users is eight hours with 71% of internet users comprising children and young adults. In such high engagement, both groups are increasingly vulnerable to Problematic Internet Use (PIU). This study investigates the intricate connections between work-life balance, problematic internet use (PIU) among parents, and the resulting impacts on children’s online behaviours and procrastination tendencies. In an era of rapid digital advancement, families are facing escalating challenges related to excessive internet usage, often intensified by the pressures of managing professional responsibilities alongside family obligations. Grounded in Attachment Theory and the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM), this research aims to explore how disruptions in work-life balance contribute to increased PIU among parents, and how such behaviours, in turn, influence their children’s internet habits and procrastination patterns. The study employed a mixed-methods research design beginning with qualitative interviews to explore family dynamics and contextual influences on digital behaviour. This was followed by a quantitative online survey distributed to a diverse group of parents to collect data on work-life balance, PIU levels, and observations of children’s internet use. Preliminary findings are expected to reveal significant associations between poor work-life balance and heightened parental PIU, as well as its downstream effects on children's digital engagement and procrastination. Additionally, the study examines the role of parenting styles and strategies related to internet use as potential moderators in these relationships. By identifying these key dynamics, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of how digital behaviour operates within the family context. The outcomes are intended to inform educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers about the importance of promoting healthier digital practices among families. Ultimately, the study aims to provide actionable recommendations for developing interventions that support balanced technology use and enhance the psychological and relational well-being of both parents and children in an increasingly connected world. Aside from that, the present study highlighted the relational nature of digital behaviour within families and underscores the importance of considering both individual and interpersonal factors when addressing problematic internet use. By offering practical recommendations and evidence-based insights, the aim is to support healthier digital practices, enhance family well-being, and inform future intervention strategies for managing technology in today’s connected world. |
