Recently, oscillating heat pipes (OHPs) have attracted increasing attention due to the low cost, high heat transfer efficiency, and adaptability, and OHPs have been applied in battery thermal management systems (BTMS). However, existing OHP-based BTMS studies suffer from limited battery volume utilization and restricted heat dissipation capacity. To address these challenges, a novel battery liquid-cooled system on a ⊥-shaped OHP is proposed, integrating the OHP with a liquid cooling plate to form a hybrid BTMS. This design aims to enhance both heat dissipation efficiency and temperature uniformity in BTMS applications. The research employs equivalent thermal resistance experiments and visualization experiments as primary methods to systematically investigate the startup, heat transfer, and flow characteristics of the ⊥-shaped OHP, examines the operational stability and performance advantages of the hybrid BTMS under various conditions, and analyzes the performance enhancement effects of pulsating coolant flow and nanofluid coolant on the hybrid BTMS. Key findings reveal that due to gravity's inability to act as a driving force, the startup performance of the ⊥-shaped OHP is initially inferior to conventional 2D-OHP, optimizing the filling ratio (26.1%) significantly improves its performance under low heat loads. During operation, the frequent flow pattern transition between slug and annular flow is the key to the stable operation of ⊥-shaped OHP under high loads. The hybrid BTMS demonstrates superior temperature uniformity compared to liquid BTMS without OHP, with a 21.1% reduction in maximum temperature difference (ΔTmax) at 280 W. Furthermore, leveraging the dual heat transfer mechanism, the system exhibits robust performance under non-standard conditions, with inclination angles and uneven heating causing only a 10.6% increase in equivalent thermal resistance (RBTMS) at 310 W. Low-frequency pulsating coolant flow (0.02–0.04 Hz) periodically increases thermal load on the OHP, promoting stable oscillation motion of the working fluid and significantly improving the cooling performance of the hybrid system at lower total heat loads. Increasing the concentration of graphene nanofluid further enhances system's cooling performance, but it also reduces the forced convection effect in the OHP. Under 240 W, the optimized hybrid BTMS using a combination of nanofluids and pulsating flow achieves significant improvements in cooling and temperature uniformity compared to the baseline design. The RBTMS and ΔTmax are reduced by 23.7% and 29.2%, respectively. This hybrid system is particularly well-suited for high heat flux scenarios, such as LiDAR, high-power chargers, and hydrogen fuel cell cooling. The study advances the understanding of non-standard OHP structures and hybrid cooling systems, providing theoretical support and practical guidance for OHP structural design and hybrid cooling system development. |
