The increasing need for flexible sensors in fields like robotics and wearables has drawn attention to dielectric elastomers (DEs), especially polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), known for its stability and quick response. However, PDMS's naturally low dielectric permittivity limits its performance. This study explored enhancing PDMS films by adding both hard fillers (TiO2 and ZnO) and a soft filler (silicone oil), focusing on moisture control, filler compatibility, and long-term stability. Initially, the research found that calcining TiO2 and ZnO fillers to remove moisture significantly improved the breakdown strength of PDMS films. Films with 15 wt% calcined TiO2 achieved the highest breakdown strength at 130 V/μm. As TiO2 consistently outperformed ZnO, it was selected as hard filler for the subsequent parts of this study. Next, silicone oil was introduced to reduce the stiffness caused by hard fillers, and nonpolar fillers were used to boost moisture resistance. The best overall performance was seen with 3 wt% stearic-acid-modified TiO2, which delivered the highest breakdown strength and permittivity, resulting in an excellent Figure of Merit (FOM) of 3.57. Finally, to tackle the issue of silicone oil migrating to the PDMS surface, bacterial cellulose (BC) was used as a “glue” to contain the fillers. The combination of 15 wt% BC and 10 wt% silicone oil achieved an FOM of 1.58. In summary, adding these fillers effectively boosted the permittivity and electromechanical performance of PDMS films. |
