Biomass is a renewable resource that is considered carbon neutral as it releases carbon dioxide absorbed during its growth, counteracting the greenhouse effect. In response to the global demand for renewable energy, this work evaluate the issues of managing various biomass feedstocks and proposes solutions through torrefaction and pelletization processes. Creating biofuels from biomass involves using processes like torrefaction, which is highly efficient. Usually, biomass has high moisture content and is not very dense, making it burn less effectively. This study focuses on the torrefaction of mesocarp fiber (MF) and wood sawdust (WS) for solid biofuel generation at temperature 250ºC and 275ºC, addressing the challenges of feedstock heterogeneity which means of different responds of resources effect of torrefaction. This combination improves fuel properties, as seen in the Higher Heating Value (HHV), where MF reaches highest value at 27.7508 MJ/kg at 275°C. Also, the result shows the lowest moisture content at 4.02% and high fixed carbon at 60.89%, positively affecting pellet strength. Lower moisture content also leads to better water and impact resistance of the pellets. For instance, a single MF pellet at 275°C has the highest impact resistance at 99.24% and has highest water resistance. In contrast, MF mixed with WS, had lower impact and water resistance that shows the low quality of pellet. This study suggests that torrefaction and pelletization prove effective in producing high-quality biomass pellets from palm oil wastes. |
