Coffee waste is a byproduct of coffee production and brewing activities, is becoming increasingly popular as an activated carbon. This organic waste consists of discarded coffee grounds, husks, and pulps, which provide unique prospects for repurposing and valorization. Leachate wastewater from landfill sites frequently includes high quantities of iron, causing environmental issues and needing sophisticated treatment solutions. Several analytical methods, including spectrophotometry and atomic absorption spectroscopy, have been used to determine iron concentrations and speciation. In this study, the preparation of coffee waste activated carbon involved both chemical and physical activation methods. Chemical activation uses zinc chloride as the activating agent while physical activation exposing the material to a flow of nitrogen gas at 500°C. The coffee waste activated carbon was synthesized using BET and SEM. The function of using BET analysis is because it can analyze the surface area of coffee waste activated carbon to match with their porosity conducted by SEM. From SEM result, it shows that chemical synthesized coffee waste activated carbon have more pores with surface area 47.75 m2/g compared to physical synthesized coffee waste activated carbon and raw coffee waste. On the other hand, batch experiments were performed to study the removal of iron from leachate wastewater using coffee waste activated carbon under several condition including pH of 10, agitation speed at 300 rpm, adsorbent dosage of 0.3 g and contact time 4 hours. The findings revealed a rapid initial adsorption of iron, occurring within 4 hours. In summary, the analysis revealed that the utilization of ZnCl2 as the activating agent in the chemical activation process resulted in highly efficient removal of iron from iron simulated solution and leachate wastewater. Overall, it also explores the environmental consequences and economic viability of using coffee waste, with a focus on the possibility to create a circular economy within the coffee industry. |
