| Summary, etc. |
The combustion of coal is a major contributor to CO2 emissions, and the amount of this greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is increasing, leading to global warming and climate change. Post-combustion via adsorption-based CO2 capture over porous solid materials known as adsorbent is an excellent technique for removing CO2. The most frequent absorbent CaO but it consumes high temperature and lead adsorbent deterioration. ZnO has potential to replace CaO since ZnO is one of the most abundant metal oxides, inexpensive and safe. Nevertheless, there is not much research to investigate ZnO as adsorbent to capture CO2. Applying Aspen Plus for CO2 capture is money and time efficient. In this study, the objectives are investigate to determine the effects of amount and composition of coal combusted on CO2 capture through adsorption process using Aspen Plus simulation. The work also aimed to determine the effects of pressure and temperature on CO2 capture through adsorption process using Aspen Plus simulation. Through this study, the analysis on percentage of CO2 capture has been carried out. The wet coal has undergone drying process then decomposition to decompose the elements in the coal. Next, coal combustion was allowed to occur, and later CO2 was captured via adsorption using ZnO adsorbent. Based on the research, the highest amount of CO2 was produced from the South Africa’s coal was 5428.91 kg/hr since it contains the highest content of carbon which is 82 wt%. South Africa’s coal has been selected to investigate the effect of coal amount, temperature, and pressure on CO2 capture. By applying 22615 kg/hr coal, it produced the highest amount of CO2 (5428.91 kg/hr). When the pressure of adsorption system was increased from 1 bar to 20 bar, the CO2 capture increased from 33.10% until 99.60 % while when the temperature increased from 0 ℃to 130 ℃, the CO2 capture decreased from 99.60 % until 0.00 %. As conclusion from this study, different type of coals produced different amounts of CO2 according to their carbon contents. The amount of CO2 produced is also dependent on the amount of coal. This study also showed that adsorption of CO2 with ZnO is more efficient when the reaction was operated at low temperature and high pressure.
