Aquaculture operations are progressively embracing sustainable techniques such as "Biofloc," which entails cultivating advantageous microbial communities to improve water quality and promote the growth of aquatic organisms. This study explores the vital function of carbon source and concentration in the development of Biofloc within aquaculture systems. This feature is essential for maximizing nutrient utilization and maintaining water quality. While Biofloc technology is gaining popularity, maintaining consistent Biofloc concentrations remains a challenge. Therefore, it is crucial to have a comprehensive grasp of the ideal conditions for its development. The study specifically examined three carbon sources (sugar, honey longan, and molasses) at concentrations ranging from 0.5 g/L to 2.5 g/L. The objective was to increase ammonia removal and thereby enhance water quality. Bacillus subtilis, a bacterial strain, was utilised in the experiment using a two-step process that involved preparing the inoculum and then carrying out fermentation. The results demonstrated that sugar had the greatest statistical significance (P<0.05), as both sugar and molasses achieved the complete removal of ammonia (100%) at a concentration of only 1 g/L. The study's objective, achieved by the substitution of sugar with a concentration of 1.7 g/L with molasses having a concentration of 1 g/L, emphasizes the potential of molasses as a viable and cost-effective substitute. Suggestions involve conducting additional research on different levels of molasses concentration to achieve an optimal balance between performance and cost efficiency. It is important to highlight the potential of molasses in enhancing the quality of Biofloc water, promoting sustainability, and reducing operating expenses in aquaculture activities Keywords: Biofloc; carbon sources; concentration; ammonia removal; inoculum; fermentation |
