The global need for sustainable energy has led to significant research into alternative fuel sources, with hydrogen emerging as a viable option due to its high energy content and eco-friendly byproducts. This study is to synthesize, characterize and evaluate the effectiveness of monometallic Ni- and Cu- catalysts supported on silica (SiO2) derived from silica sludge by bi-reforming of methane (BRM) in producing hydrogen-rich syngas. The catalysts were synthesized using an ultrasonic-assisted impregnation approach and characterized by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller Analysis (BET), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. The experimental findings highlight the effect of reaction temperature and impact of partial pressure on the catalytic activity and stability throughout the BRM process. Critical performance indicators, including methane conversion efficiency and syngas ratio will be analyzed using gas chromatography. The reaction study demonstrated that the SiO2 catalyst support had the largest surface area (318.14 𝑚2/𝑔), which decreases significantly for 15%Ni/SiO2 (183.0672 𝑚2/𝑔) and 15%Cu/SiO2 (159.8413 𝑚2/𝑔). Additionally, the 15%Ni/SiO2 catalyst achieved superior performance, with methane conversion of 92.16%, carbon dioxide conversion of 90.70% at a reaction temperature of 850°C and a methane partial pressure of 45kPa, maintaining an H₂/CO ratio of 2.74. Post-reaction XRD analysis of the spent catalyst at 850°C revealed crystalline graphite structures, indicating carbon deposition. In conclusion, this research contributes significantly to catalyst design for methane bi-reforming, which is essential for addressing the global energy crisis. It provides an environmentally friendly solution for hydrogen production, supporting the increasing demand for clean energy. |
