Summary, etc. Adsorption by activated carbon is widely employed in various industrial applications due to its highly porous structure and larger surface area for effective removal of contaminants from air and water. Over time, activated carbon becomes saturated with adsorbed contaminants and requires a cost effective and sustainable solution to restore its capacity otherwise these spent activated carbon (SAC) must be either disposed of as solid waste into landfill and incinerated. To address this, chemical regeneration has been identified as a more ideal and economically feasible solution not only to reduce secondary environmental pollution by minimizing waste generation but also conserves natural sources by reducing the need for processing natural raw materials compared to thermal regeneration. However, it is limited by several challenges such as concern over undesired byproduct formation or potential changes on the properties of carbon and requirement to operate at room temperature (< 50 ℃). This study focuses on the chemical regeneration of SAC using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sulphuric acid (H2SO4) solutions under varying different concentrations and temperatures. Next, SAC samples were pretreated and regenerated with NaOH and H2SO4 solutions at various concentrations of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 % (w/v and v/v) and temperatures of 25, 35, 45, 55 ℃. Then, the regenerated activated carbon was assessed via methylene blue (MB) adsorption test and SEM analysis. Findings indicated the best conditions for SAC regeneration as 8 % (w/v) NaOH at 25 ℃ and 10 % (v/v) H2SO4 at 55 ℃ by regeneration efficiency (RE) of 72 and 81.8 % respectively while the SEM images showed that both treatments developed new pores than SAC. In conclusion, both acid and alkaline treatments have successfully restored SAC capacity compared to fresh activated carbon (FAC) and further studies are recommended to optimize regeneration duration and enhance adsorption performance.
