Summary, etc. The development of antibacterial wound plaster using Malaysian stingless bee honey (Geniotrigona thoracica) aims to address the growing concern of bacterial infections in wound care, particularly those caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. This study focuses on the formulation of a wound plaster that incorporates diluted G. thoracica honey, leveraging its natural antibacterial properties while enhancing its physical characteristics for clinical application. The research evaluates various physical properties, including appearance, swelling behavior, degradation rates, and tensile strength, to assess the suitability of the plaster for clinical use. Additionally, the antibacterial efficacy of three types of plasters: hydrogel-honey plaster, honey plaster, and commercial plaster was compared. Initial findings reveal that the honey plaster exhibited the largest inhibition zone against S. aureus, measuring 15 mm, while hydrogel-honey plaster followed closely behind. Subsequent observations indicated that both honey and hydrogel-honey plasters achieved comparable inhibition zones, while the commercial plaster showed no antibacterial activity in any observations. Notably, none of the plasters demonstrated any inhibition against E. coli, suggesting that honey concentration or plaster material may influence their antibacterial effectiveness. Physical evaluations highlighted that the hydrogel-honey plaster is particularly suitable for wounds with high exudate levels due to its high degradation rate of 6.97%, which facilitates moisture management but lacking durability for prolonged use. Conversely, the honey plaster exhibited a lowest degradation rate of 3.07%, balancing structural integrity and moisture retention with notable antimicrobial properties. The commercial plaster had the moderate degradation rate of 3.52%, providing stability but lacking therapeutic benefits. In conclusion, hydrogel-honey plaster offers a good antibacterial properties and mechanical performance, making it particularly effective for managing wounds with high exudate levels. Honey plaster offers a balanced approach suitable for long-term care, while commercial plaster provides stability but lacks the additional therapeutic benefits found in honey formulations. These findings underscore the potential of hydrogel-honey plaster as an innovative solution in wound care management.
