The oil and gas industry faces ongoing challenges in optimizing reservoir simulation, particularly in low-permeability reservoirs, where traditional fracturing techniques often fail to deliver an optimal results. Hydraulic fracturing, a key technique for enhancing hydrocarbon recovery, is significantly impacted by fluid behavior and fracture propagation in impermeable formations. With the growing complexity of reservoir characteristics, innovative approaches are needed to improve the efficiency of these operations. This study examines the fundamental hydro effects during impermeable reservoir fracturing using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and eXtended Discrete Element Method (XDEM). The primary aim of this research is to examine the interaction between fluid flow and fracture formation in impermeable reservoirs to enhance hydraulic fracturing techniques. Through a combination of numerical simulations, the research models the behavior of fluids, as well as the initiation and propagation of fractures under varying pressure and fluid conditions. Additionally, the research investigates how fluid characteristics, such as viscosity and density, influence the development of the fractures. The results reveal that hydrostatic pressure is a significant factor in fracture initiation, with higher pressures facilitating fracture propagation within impermeable reservoirs. The flow of fluid impacts the trajectories of fractures, which in turn impacts the overall effectiveness of the fracturing process. Moreover, the integration of CFD and XDEM provides a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic interactions between fluids and rock formations, revealing the complexities of reservoir fracturing. This study also demonstrates how these interactions can be optimized to improve fracture networks and increased productivity of reservoirs. In conclusion, these results contribute to the advancement of reservoir fracturing techniques, offering valuable insights for the development of more efficient and sustainable methods for oil and gas extraction. The research emphasizes the importance of hydro effects in reservoir engineering, especially in challenging conditions where traditional fracturing methods may be less effective. By enhancing our understanding of hydro effects, this study provides potential solutions for improving the efficiency of fracturing operations in impermeable reservoirs. |
