This study developed smart colorimetric films by incorporating natural pH indicators, anthocyanin (ACN) from red cabbage and curcumin (CC), into bacterial cellulose (BC) films at varying ratios (ACN, CC, ACN25:CC75, ACN50:CC50, and ACN75:CC25). The addition of these indicators influenced the films’ physical and mechanical properties, with thickness ranging from 0.06 mm to 0.23 mm, moisture content between 8.62% and 47.43%, and water solubility reaching 43.25% in ACN-based films, indicating improved degradability. FTIR analysis confirmed successful integration, with characteristic functional groups of anthocyanins and curcumin present. Mechanical testing revealed that while the control film had the highest tensile strength (34.25 MPa), ACN75:CC25 exhibited the highest flexibility with 17.44% elongation at break, making it a promising candidate for flexible packaging applications. Color stability analysis showed that ACN-rich films maintained their purple hue, while CC-based films remained yellow, with blended formulations displaying gradual color transitions. These films exhibited excellent pH responsiveness, proving their potential as smart indicators for food packaging. Future studies are recommended to explore a wider range of ACN:CC ratios to further refine film properties for specific applications. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of incorporating anthocyanin from red cabbage and curcumin at different ratios into the bacterial cellulose/chitosan matrix on its physicochemical properties. |
