The purpose of this study was to fabricate and characterize thin film copper (Cu)-doped TiO₂ photocatalysts and assess their abilities to degrade methylene blue (MB) dye. Photocatalysis was performed using an ultraviolet (UV) lamp simulating sunlight at 1 Sun (1000 W/m²). Thin films were synthesized with varying doping concentrations of Cu (0 to 6 mol%) and deposited on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass slides with a set active area of 1 cm². A model pollutant solution was assessed utilizing an aqueous MB solution (10 ppm, 8 mL) for degradation experiments taken at 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes. Absorbance spectra were recorded using the Shimadzu UV-2600 spectrophotometer to assess degradation efficacy and optical bandgaps were determined using the Tauc plot using an indirect transition assumption. The results show that doping with 3 mol% Cu yielded the best performance where degradation time was decreased by 52.49% when compared to control. Degradation followed pseudo-first order kinetics with R² ≈ 1 and the optimal doping concentration determined by second order polynomial regression was about 2.84 mol%. Stability results determined the films maintained their integrity physically post-use. The crystal structure and phase composition of the Cu-doped TiO₂ thin films was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD results proved the preservation of anatase phase in all doping concentrations and observable peak shifts signifying the lattice distortion via the process of substitutional insertion of Cu²⁺ ions. However, in further studies nanoscale TiO₂ and hydrothermally grown mesoporous structures like nanopillars would provide a better static active surface area. The developed system is applicable for further uses in fertilizer, pesticide, and detergent degradation as well as oil degradation and bacterial reduction in water treatment. |
