Water sustain life, it is indispensable for the welfare of human being and its natural environment. Water quality defines as physical, chemical and biological characteristics of water, characterized through the methods of hydrometry. This study mainly focused on the water quality at Kampung Simpai, Mukim Bebar, Pekan, Pahang. Kampung Simpai is an aboriginal people village from Jakun Tribe that situated approximately 72 kilometers north east of Universiti Malaysia Pahang. The significant of this study is to be a preliminary process toward constructing a water treatment plan in this area. Clean water supply is essential to enhance Kampung Simpai villager's health. The main water sources are from manually dug shallow wells. Nine sampling wells have been selected. The wells are use by the villagers for daily purpose. Nine sets of sampling had been done to determine the water physical and chemical characteristics. The perimeters tested in this study are temperature, turbidity, total dissolve solid, salinity, conductivity, pH value, chromium, phenol and arsenic. Then the results are compares to Drinking Water Quality Standard and Dutch Environment Pollutants Standard. The data shows that ph value, chromium presence, and turbidity in samples exceeding the range that been stated in both quality standards.The minimal pH value recorded is pH 4.8, which mean the water in acidic state. Chromium detected at the value of 0.254mg/l and the highest turbidity recorded was 50.6 NTU. The results indicate that the water used by the villagers is not suitable for drinking purpose. Proper treatments have to be made before it can be drink. Water treatment system such as reverse osmosis membrane and ultra filtration system are suitable for this area because the systems are practical, economical and portable. -Author |
