Due to the rapid urbanization, the increasing demand of house has cause to the shortage of construction material, especially sand. In Malaysia, coconut is fourth important industrial crop which produce 555120 tons of coconut in each year. After processed, most of coconut wastes are being dumped to landfill. Due to the limited landfill in Malaysia, many researchers have tried to recycle coconut waste by using it in concrete production. In this study, coconut shell is used as partial sand replacement in concrete, it not only can reduce the usage of sand, it also reduces the coconut waste. The objective of this study is to determine the suitability of coconut shell as partial sand replacement in concrete. Comparison between concrete with different percentage of coconut shell is made. Slump test, compressive test, flexural and splitting tensile test was carried out to determine mechanical properties of concrete after sand was partial replaced by powdered coconut shell in 0 %, 10 %, 20 % and 30 %. The result of slump test shows that water-cement ratio is increased with increment of coconut shell percentage in concrete, coconut shell tends to absorb water from the concrete mix. The result of mechanical properties shows that replacement of sand by powdered coconut shell does not show any improvement in strength of concrete, however it still suitable to be used in reinforced concrete works. As expected, concrete strength is increased with concrete maturity. Concrete with 0% coconut shell replacement has the highest compressive strength, flexural strength and splitting tensile strength at the age of 1 day, 7 days, 28 days and 60 days, strength is reduced with increasing percentage of coconut shell. Correlation can be established between compressive strength, density, flexural strength, and splitting tensile strength. |
