In the advancement of technology era, cloud storage has been evolved and at the same time bringing convenient to the peoples around the world. However, due to its high demand, it become popular platform for cloud storage crime to take place. This had becoming a challenge for digital forensic researchers in the investigation process. Some of the challenges that will be faced by the forensics investigators in dealing with these digital crimes include the identification process, acquisition, and also the preservation of evidences that are used by criminals. This is because it is difficult to analyse the possible location of where the specific files that possess crucial information of crimes mostly resides and the type of cloud storages used. This research aims to study the existing digital evidence collection methodology, the location and the data fragments left on user’s computer prior to the usage of cloud storage application. Besides that, this research also aim to propose, test and implement a proactive method for finding the location and the data fragments left on user’s computer prior to the usage of cloud storage application for new cloud storage. By using pCloud as the case study, research and testing was conducted to determine the potential data remnant on a Windows 7 computer when user access, uploads, store and delete specific data in the clouds. By knowing the location of data remnants, we managed to contribute for deeper understanding of the crucial artifact which helps in bringing the criminal to justice. It also serve as guidelines for forensic investigator in their investigation processes. The files and data remnants collected during this research include client software files, prefetching files, link files, network traffic capture, and memory captures, along with the data remnants available prior to the use of pCloud for each activities carried out by a user. |
