Water pollution are introduction of different chemical and chiefly of environment pollution originating in human activities that called anthropogenic. Galing River is one of the river that has been excessive polluted. Galing River situated in the state of Pahang where it in Kuantan city with the catchment area 22.7 km2 and 7km long. The aim of the study was to determine the characteristics of water quality in the Galing River based on water quality index (WQI) and national water quality standard (NWQS), Malaysia and identified anthropogenic influence on the variation of specific indicator of water quality within this river. To authenticate the objective, a total of three sampling station were selected for this study, upstream (station 1), intermediate (station 2), and downstream (station 3) in the month from September to November 2016. Ten parameter were analysis based on in-situ and ex-situ test. Laboratory analysis was carried out for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3⁻N) and heavy metal such as copper, lead and chromium. For in-situ included temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolve oxygen (DO) and turbidity. Results showed station 1 was categorized as class II (clean), station 2 was under class III (slightly polluted) while station 3 was classified as class IV (polluted) based on WQI. The low concentration of DO and high concentration of BOD,COD and NH3⁻N due to the anthropogenic activities such as industrial, municipal waste and effluent from residential area. Overall, precaution should be taken immediately by the authorities to control water pollution at Galing River and it should be supported by all parties. |
