The numbers of registered vehicles in Kuantan, Pahang have increased for the last few years. These vehicles have contributed to the worsening effect on air quality caused by the emission of a few gaseous pollutants from vehicle’s exhaust. A study has been conducted at intersection between Jalan Tanah Putih and Jalan Dato’ Wong Ah Jang nearby building of Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN) and the intersection between Jalan Bukit Ubi and Jalan Dato’ Lim Hoe Lek. This study focused on the relationship between concentrations of air pollutant with traffic volume, time and type of vehicles. Sampling of Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Particulate Matter (PM10) were taken in this station. The data were taken from 8.00 am until 6.00 pm during weekdays and weekends. The average values for Carbon Monoxide (CO) for working day were 16.43 ppm and 11.88 ppm for non-working day. While, average concentration of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) on working day were is 0.012 ppm and on non-working day the mean concentration is 0.035 ppm. Average concentration for Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) is 0 ppm on working day and non-working day. The average concentration for PM10 is 78 μg/m3 for working day and 121 μg/m3 on non-working day. The connection of pollutant and the vehicles is depending on the total number of vehicles. The higher numbers of vehicles, the higher the concentration of pollutants. Besides, there are different in the concentration of air pollutant during weekday and weekend. The result indicated that Carbon Monoxide (CO) was at the highest concentration level in comparison to other three gases. However, this concentration level was still under Recommended Malaysia Air Quality Guideline (RMG). The air quality at Kuantan’s traffic area is still at an acceptable level and suitable for human daily life. |
