Building information modelling (BIM) has been characterized as both a tool and a process. It provides architectural 3D visualization and a standardized way to share and exchange building information. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in using BIM, not only for design and construction, but also the post-construction management of the built facility. With the emergence of smart built environment (SBE) technology, which embeds most spaces with smart objects to enhance the building’s efficiency, security and comfort of its occupants, there is a need to understand and address the challenges BIM faces in the design, construction and management of future smart buildings. In this case, investigation on how BIM can contribute to the development is conducted. Since BIM is designed to host information of the building throughout its life cycle, the investigation has covered phases from architecture design to structural design. Many companies still using 2D drawings and are starting to realize a 3D design because 3D modelling can save time and money. The paper shortly presents the history and development of the traditional design in civil engineering. Next, the idea of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and its practical benefits are described. Main part of the paper is devoted to discuss about what kind of merits and demerits of using these two presented technologies. |
