Summary, etc. Synthetic fibers are commonly used in retrofitting and strengthening of concrete structures. However, it is a non-biodegradable product and its manufacturing process may emit harmful substances. Natural fibers have been studied to replace synthetic fibers for external strengthening due to its low-weight and cost, good performance and environmental-friendly properties. A study has been carried out to investigate the potential application of bamboo fiber reinforced composite plate (BFRCP) in retrofitting of RC beams. The bamboo species of Gigantochloa Scortechinii (Buluh Semantan) were considered in this study. Bamboo splints have been treated with 10% of Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution before extracting the fibers of bamboo. BFRCP with 0%, 30%, 35%, 40%, 45% and 50% of fiber volume percentage were tested for tensile test (ASTM D3039) and flexural test (ASTM D790-03) to determine the optimum fiber volume percentage in fabricating BFRCP. Experimental results of mechanical testing showed that 45% of fiber loading is the optimum fiber volume percentage. RC beams have been preloaded to about 42 kN before retrofitting using BFRCP. Two different sizes of BFRCP were fabricated which was small BFRCP with dimensions of 25mm in width, 4mm in height and 250mm in length and big BFRCP with dimensions of 120mm in width, 4mm in height and 350mm in length. There were 3 different retrofitting configurations which were with 2 rows of small BFRCP in staggered arrangement at beam soffit as Case 1, a row of big BFRCP at beam soffit as Case 2 and the addition of a row of small BFRCP at the side surface of the beam in Case 1 as Case 3. In terms of structural behaviour, retrofitting by using small BFRCP in staggered arrangement showed small strengthening effect on the preloaded RC beam. On the other hand, retrofitting by using big BFRCP improved the strength of the preloaded RC beam by 13.50%. All the beams failed in flexure with vertical cracks concentrated in the middle span of the beams. Debonding of composite plate at small BFRCP. Cracks developed at the gaps between two BFRCPs. This signifies that the BFRCP has the potential to be an alternative in retrofitting of RC beams. However, the configuration of composite plates affects the retrofitting and strengthening effect of RC beam.
