Malaysia, being the second largest palm oil producer in the world dependent on good road to transport the oil palm from the estates to the factory for processing purpose. Since, most of the oil palm estates are located in the poor peat soil condition, the road damages are one of the main issues faced by the community in the oil palm industry. Road damages not only cause inconvenience to the road users while have potential to increase the accident rate within the palm oil industry. Therefore, this study aimed to provide better road usability convenience while providing proper guidelines to address the issues related to the road damages particularly in the peat soil condition. To achieve that aim, the objectives are to (1) investigate the perception survey on usability convenience based on experience driving on a road laid on peat soil. (2) identify the RII ranking of the factors contributing to road damages and (3) determine severity level for road maintenance using Gwyddion software image analysis. The study focused on the road within the palm oil plantation in Jeram, Kuala Selangor. To achieve the objectives, the questionnaires in this research was designed based on systematic literature review from the past studies and validated by the experience professionals in the road maintenance and repair work. Five-point Likert Scale was used to determine the perceptions of the user. The validated questionnaires were then distributed to 250 respondents which possessed driving license and of age more than eighteen years old. Out of 250 respondents, 36 respondents were rejected since the questionnaires were not completed. A total of 214 respondents were used to determine the perception survey on usability convenience and to rank the factors contributing to road damages. To assess the severity of the road, critical locations along the road has been identified. Based on the critical road condition, a total of 33 samples of images has been captured. The images taken from the along the site were the analysed using Gwyddion software to determine the severity of potholes according to Jabatan Kerja Raya Guidelines (1992). The result concluded that the main factors influencing road damages are safety, signs/ traffic/ warning and road markers, conditions, overloading vehicles, road specification, traffic volume, climatic change, and a poor drainage system are the eight factors. Overloading vehicles ranked highest in RII of 0.778, followed by bad drainage system of RII 0.775, and safety of RII 0.771. From the perspective of road severity level, out of 33 sample images, 12 sample images were classified as high severity, while samples with moderate severity and low severity were 13 and 8 sample images respectively. The result of the study could be used as the reference to the expert teams of Jabatan Kerja Raya in proposing suitable maintenance for road damages particularly in areas with poor soil conditions. |
