Gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) are among the most promising alternatives for replacing flammable liquid electrolytes. Hence, this study was carried out to develop a novel GPE specifically tailored for lithium-ion batteries, comprising of two systems: poly(methyl) methacrylate (PMMA)/poly (lactic acid) (PLA)-lithium bis(oxalato) borate (LiBOB) and poly(methyl) methacrylate/poly (lactic acid)-lithium bis(oxalato) borate-silicon dioxide. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis validates interactions among PMMA-PLA, LiBOB, and SiO2 components. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals an enhancement in the amorphous phase in both GPE systems as the LiBOB and SiO2 content increases. This finding is substantiated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), indicating reduced weight loss from 64% for LI20 to 47% for SI6. Room temperature ionic conductivity improved from 1.37 × 10ିଷ S cm-1 for LI20 to 2.19 × 10ିଷ S cm-1 for SI6. Temperature-dependent behavior exhibited an Arrhenius pattern for both GPE systems, with regression values close to unity (ଶ~1). GPEs with the highest conductivity (LI20 and SI6) were selected to measure lithium transport number and electrochemical stability window. Lithium-ion transference number increased from 0.32 (LI20) to 0.48 (SI6), and the potential stability window extended from 4.1V (LI20) to 4.7V (SI6) with the addition of 6 wt.% SiO2. GPE samples demonstrating optimal performance as electrolytes were further employed in a Li|GPEs|Graphite cell setup. Cell discharge capacity utilizing SI6 was found to exhibit much higher value as compared to LI20. An electrochemical impedance measurement was carried out and it was found out that the cell resistance of Cell II is much lower (2.26 × 10ଷ ) as compared to Cell I (1.78 × 10ସ ). These findings underscore the potential of the PMMA-PLA hybrid polymer GPEs for lithium-ion battery applications, subject to additional enhancement studies.
