Subject(s): Dissertation note: Thesis (Doctor of Philosophy) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2025 Abstract: The cabin air temperature of a parked vehicle can reach above 80oC in clear sky days. The high temperature can cause hyperthermia for trapped children and pets, anxieties to car occupants upon their initial entry, deterioration of interior surfaces, spoil the electronic components of cabins and increasing the peak cooling load and cooling capacity, which negatively impact the fuel economy, driving ranges and increasing tailpipe emissions. This research aimed to theoretically and experimentally evaluate the impact of integrating solar-induced ventilation system on cabin interior temperatures reduction during thermal soaking for occupants' thermal comfort upon entry. Four different cases were carefully chosen to conduct outdoor thermal hot soaking tests; case (I) with 100% recirculation mode (air conditioning ducts are on 0% fresh air); case (II) with 0% recirculation mode (air conditioning ducts are on 100% fresh air); case (III) with 100% recirculation mode and with extra inlets; and case (IV) with 100% recirculation mode, extra inlets and additional stack (1 m). Important locations such as driver airbreath, foot-well, dashboard, windshield, glass cover, in/outlet collector channel and absorber plate were selected for monitoring and recording air and surface temperatures by using thermocouple wires type K. The developed model results were in a very good agreement with the literature and the experimental results. Thus, the model can be used as a tool to predict the performance of the ventilation system and cabin air temperature accurately. The experimental results revealed that the maximum temperature reduction and the average percentage of reduction obtained by case-III (20.5°C and 60.5%) is higher than that obtained by case-I (4.9°C and 20%), case-II (7.7°C and 33%) and case- IV (13.3°C and 49.6%). Case (III) has developed a higher mass flow rate with optimum air flow pattern inside the modified cabin. Thus, implementing solar chimney concept has successfully reduced the hot cabin soak temperature as demonstrated in this study.
