Subject(s): Dissertation note: Thesis (Doctor of Philosophy) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2025 Abstract: Tenun Pahang (TP) is a traditional Malay textile that represents the artisanal heritage of the state of Pahang. It originated from Sulawesi and was introduced to the Malay Peninsula more than 300 years ago, around the year 1722. This study aims to describe the elements involved in the formation of Tenun Pahang motifs and to analyse them as expressions of the values, knowledge, and wisdom embedded in the local wisdom of the Pahang community. The qualitative descriptive data collected were analysed inductively to achieve the objectives of the study. This research adopts an ethnographic approach grounded in inductive reasoning, with data gathered through observation, interviews, artifact analysis, and the application of three theoretical frameworks: the theory of mimesis (Plato) from Western art, Zakaria Ali’s Aesthetic of Malay Art, and the Four Creating Process theory by Dzul Haimi in the context of Islamic art. Observations were conducted on the motif production process to enable an in-depth analysis of the formation of Tenun Pahang motifs. Interviews were also carried out with practitioners in the weaving industry during the motif creation process, supported by expert interviews in the field of textiles to obtain professional insights and analysis. The analysis revealed that the motifs of Tenun Pahang (TP), which serve as decorative backgrounds on the products, are inspired by natural elements closely related to the daily lives of the weavers. Tenun Pahang (TP) still preserves traditional techniques inherited through generations, making it a cultural heritage that continues to be practised today. Nevertheless, elements of innovation and creativity have also been incorporated as part of a reconstruction process, allowing for the emergence of more contemporary Tenun Pahang (TP) motifs. This demonstrates that the motifs of Tenun Pahang (TP) represent a harmonious integration between humanity and the natural environment, while also reflecting the values of local wisdom that are significant within the context of traditional Malay textile art. Keywords: Tenun Pahang (TP), Local Wisdom, Motif, Nature, Elements
