Recently Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) has been proved to increase properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The current production of CNC with good thermal stability raises environmental concerns as it uses an extensive amount of acid. The main objective was to isolate CNC from EFB and investigate the effect of CNC towards mechanical and thermal behaviour. The CNC was isolated via mixed acid (MA) hydrolysis from empty fruit bunch (EFB). CNC obtained was added in TPU for 0–3 wt.% loading. The CNC was characterized using FESEM and TGA. The length of CNC recorded was 140.42 ± 5.14nm while the diameter was 36.86 ± 6.32nm with yield production of 78.5%. The CNC/TPU nanocomposites are characterized for mechanical and thermal properties. The CNC started to degrade at 281.5℃ which indicate that the CNC have high thermal stability. The best result obtained for tensile strength recorded were at 3 wt.% with 27.69107 MPa. In conclusion, good thermal behaviours make the CNC could withstand in high temperature without degrade hence improving the mechanical properties.
