This study investigates the effectiveness of chitosan, a polycationic biopolymer, as a corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in a salt solution as an imitation to imitate the seawater environment (1 M NaCl solution). The chitosan coating is applied using the dip coating (DC) method. The corrosion protection efficacy is evaluated using various electrochemical techniques. The results show that the DC-made chitosan coating acts as a strong physical and chemical barrier, inhibiting corrosion in the aggressive NaCl environment. The corrosion rate of carbon steel increases with higher temperatures, suggesting a physisorption mechanism for the chitosan coating. The DC technique exhibits a high inhibition efficiency of 73%. This study highlights the potential of chitosan as a corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in environments and emphasizes the practicality and cost-effectiveness of the dip coating method. Further research can explore the optimization of the chitosan coating process and its performance in different corrosive environments for long-term corrosion prevention.
