This research is about the study of sodium alginate biofilm incorporated with ZnO NPs using pineapple waste extract as active food packaging. The most important performances during film production involved the preparation of ZnO NPs powder and the ZnO/SA solution for film. Various techniques were employed for the analysis of characteristic properties of SA film, 0.5% ZnONPs/SA film, 1.0% ZnONPs/SA film, 1.5% ZnONPs/SA film, and pure ZnO NPs. FTIR is used to analyze the functional groups, XRD is for the structural property, SEM-EDX is for the surface morphology and elemental compositions, and TGA is for the evaluation of the thermal stability of the fabricated films. The physical properties were determined through the measurement of various physicochemical parameters such as thickness, opacity, moisture content, and water solubility. Its mechanical properties including tensile strength and elongation at break have been investigated. Biodegradability was evaluated through soil burial degradation experiments. ZnO NPs applied to SA film enhanced its general physical parameters such as thickness, moisture content, and water solubility, as well as increasing its tensile strength and elongation at break when compared to SA film alone. The active film synthesised with 0.5% ZnO NPs/SA has strong mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 79.56 MPa and an elongation at break of 25.26. ZnO nanoparticles improve the film's opacity (7.48) and thickness (0.066 mm) while drastically lowering its moisture content (15.30%) and water solubility (35.03%) when compared to pure SA film. These characterization results highlight the strong potential of ZnO NPs/SA films combined with natural extracts for developing advanced active food packaging solutions.
