Biodiesel able to reduce the greenhouse gases emissions by 78.45%. This study focuses on the optimization of biodiesel production process from palm oil using the process simulation software Aspen Plus. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal conditions necessary to maximize the yield of biodiesel produced by focusing on key variables such as residence time, reaction temperature and the molar ratio of methanol to palm oil. A secondary goal was to reduce the heat duty of the CSTR reactor used in the production process as a measure of process efficiency. Methodologically, this study simulates a base-case and compare the results with literature for validation. Then, the study was continued with the crucial experimentally determined process parameters into Aspen Plus to evaluate the effect of varying process parameters to the yield of biodiesel and the heat duty of reactor. The yield of biodiesel was calculated using the equation specifically designed to consider the flow rates of reactants and products. This research indicates that both biodiesel yield and heat duty of reactor increase with longer residence time and a higher methanol to palm oil molar ratio whereas they decrease as the reaction temperature increases. Besides that, the research successfully achieved the objectives by maximizing the yield of biodiesel to 99.44% and minimizing the heat duty to -19.9926 kW. The findings provide a pathway for efficient biodiesel production with significant contributions to renewable energy advancement.
